The organization mobilizes Seattle-area students and community members to demand comprehensive gun legislation from elected officials. It is part of the nationwide March for Our Lives movement that has chapters across the country.

Through marches, advocacy, and community engagement, MFOL Seattle amplifies voices calling for common-sense gun reform and safer communities for all.

When did the original March for Our Lives Seattle take place?

The original March for Our Lives Seattle took place on Saturday, March 24th, 2018. The event ran from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, beginning at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill.

Thousands of participants marched through Seattle streets to the International Fountain at Seattle Center. The march was one of hundreds of sibling events held simultaneously across the United States and around the world.

The event brought together students, families, educators, and community leaders united in their call for legislative action on gun violence prevention.

What are the main goals of March for Our Lives Seattle?

The primary goal is to demand comprehensive and effective gun legislation at both state and federal levels. Key legislative priorities include universal background checks, banning semi-automatic rifles, and repealing the Dickey Amendment.

The organization also advocates for funding CDC research on gun violence, raising the minimum age to purchase firearms, and implementing extreme risk protection orders. These measures aim to protect schools, neighborhoods, and public spaces.

Beyond legislation, MFOL Seattle works to elevate the stories of marginalized communities disproportionately affected by gun violence and to ensure youth voices are heard in policy discussions.

Educating yourself and others about gun safety legislation and sharing information within your community helps build broader support for meaningful change.

What gun legislation has Washington State passed since the march?

Washington State has been a leader in gun safety legislation. The state passed Initiative 1639 in 2018, which raised the minimum age to purchase semi-automatic rifles to 21, enhanced background checks, and established safe storage requirements.

Additional measures have included restrictions on high-capacity magazines and expanded extreme risk protection orders, allowing courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a danger to themselves or others.

These legislative achievements reflect the ongoing advocacy of organizations like March for Our Lives Seattle and demonstrate the impact of sustained community engagement on public policy.
